Asilah's Birthday Wishlist:

1) Pretty things that i can use to decorate my boring workstation. It can be anything from frames, to photographs or pretty little pictures.. Just anything to inspire me to get through the day at work. :D

2) Something to support my back for my work chair. I realised that i sometimes get lower backaches coz the chair at work doesn't really give proper support to my lower back. It can be a pretty comfy cushion or even those netted things that I saw my colleagues use where they strap this thing to their chair and it supports their back. =)

3) Pretty dresses for work and play, preferably knee-length. :p

4) Pretty vintage accessories. :)

5) If all else fails, just get me anything pretty; pretty boys included. =p

So let's talk about marriage. Yes, the social, spiritual, or legal union of two individuals. The holy matrimony of two souls, in sickness and in health, till death do us part. The exchange of powerful vows between soulmates; Or at least they think that they are soulmates, all made for each other. Yeah all that.

Recently I've come across too many young individuals who are either married, going to get married/engaged, waiting for a proposal from their long term partner, and then flaunting the big rock on the finger to the whole world. And people who are just dying to get tied down or seriously considering this lifetime commitment with people whom I am not quite sure is the right one for them.

OK i should stop being the cynical bitch here. No offense to anybody. It's not that i don't believe in the institution called marriage. Or that I don't ever wanna get married. Being the hopeless romantic that I am, I do believe in finding THE ONE, being swept off your feet by THE ONE, and settling down with THE ONE happily ever after, eventually.

Yes people, the key word here is eventually. To me, marriage is a lifetime commitment which involves so many issues and parties. It is not a joke! Just when you think you've come to terms with it, you discover more nooks and crannies that are tangled up with this thing called marriage. You need to be mentally, physically, emotionally and financially prepared before you enter this new chapter of life. And I wonder if these people actually question themselves before they make this sacred choice. And personally, I have so many things to achieve first before I settle down. Too many things need to be done and be put in place. I need to feel the satisfaction of realising all my personal goals and dreams and say that I've succeeded. I am happy with the way things are right now and bottomline is I'm definitely not prepared for such a huge commitment like this. At least not now.

So for those who have found THE ONE they wanna be with, congratulations. And for those who share my sentiments, I say fret not. There's no need to rush, really. Coz after all, all's well that ends well. :)

But while on this side of the world we're celebrating the breaking of a new year, let us not dismiss the chaotic mess and suffering that others are going through on their not-so-happy new year. Israel attacks on Gaza, Mumbai terror events, the ongoing turmoil in Iraq and Afghanistan- innocent lives are being compromised everyday right to this very second, and all we can do is just sit and watch helplessly. As frustrating as it is, let us all put our hands together and pray that peace would beckon to this world in '09.

So we bid farewell to the past of '08 and all its excess baggage, and as for now..

I think women have this listening faculty more than men. It is not the fault of men. They lose it because of their long habit of striving in business, of self-assertion. And the more forceful men are, the less they can listen as they grow older. And that is why women in general are more fun than men, more restful and inspiriting.

Now this non-listening of able men is the cause of one of the saddest things in the world - the loneliness of fathers, of those quietly sad men who move along with their grown children like remote ghosts.

When my father was over 70, he was a fiery, humorous, admirable man, a scholar, a man of great force. But he was deep in the loneliness of old age and another generation. He was so fond of me. But he could not hear me - not one word I said, really. I was just audience. I would walk around the lake with him on a beautiful afternoon and he would talk to me about Darwin and Huxley and higher criticism of the Bible.

"Yes, I see, I see," I kept saying and tried to keep my mind pinned to it, but I was restive and bored. There was a feeling of helplessness because he could not hear what I had to say about it. When I spoke I found myself shouting, as one does to a foreigner, and in a kind of despair that he could not hear me. After the walk I would feel that I had worked off my duty and I was anxious to get him settled and reading in his Morris chair, so that I could go out and have a livelier time with other people. And he would sigh and look after me absentmindedly with perplexed loneliness.

For years afterward I have thought with real suffering about my father's loneliness. Such a wonderful man, and reaching out to me and wanting to know me! But he could not. He could not listen. But now I think that if only I had known as much about listening then as I do now, I could have bridged the chasm between us.

To give an example: Recently, a man I had not seen for 20 years wrote me. He was an unusually forceful man and had made a great deal of money. But he had lost his ability to listen. He talked rapidly and told wonderful stories and it was just fascinating to hear them. But when I spoke - restlessness: "Just hand me that, will you? ... Where is my pipe?" It was just a habit. He read countless books and was eager to take in ideas, but he just could not listen to people."

I know that I've been a tad bad, making you wait for sooooooo looonnggng for me to post this up, but I assure you that I've been a really really good girl for the past one year and more. So here is my christmas wish list, with no. 1 being the most wanted. ;p

1. Sigur Rós - Hvarf-Heim

The new cd by Icelandic band Sigur Rós. You can get it from all major record stores, the most convenient being HMV. *hint hint*

2. More long necklaces, just like the one that I got from Chinatown. The "2 hearts that beat as one" necklace that I share with my sayang. Something simple will do. Heheh..

3. Any cds by the band Interpol, also found in all major record stores. I wouldn't mind either one below. :)

4. And last but not least, if all else fails, pleeeeaaaassseee santa, get me a Lover, just like Carrie's Aleksandr Petrovsky, only cuter. And younger. ;p

They say that life is a journey down a road & you're destined to take a walk down this road. You can choose to go fast or go slow, run, skip, hop, whatever. It's seldom a straight route, & along the way, you will meet bumps, certain barriers or even road blocks which will pose a challenge for you to pass through. But you still move along, coz that's what you were destined to do. But how you choose to pass through is entirely up to you. You can even make a detour or go around it if you choose to do so. And you meet different people taking the same paths as you, or sometimes they may just be passing by. But you still move along down the beaten road. When you reach a crossroad, you make a choice and walk on. Sometimes you may even pass by stopovers where you can just stop, take a breather and take a rest perhaps.

Or you can just standstill & let everything & everyone pass you by.

I think the time has come for me to continue walking & move along now. And if along the beaten track i'm destined to fall again, i'll just pick myself up and continue walking.
